About Amy
Amy has taught communication at the collegiate level for 15 years; she is currently an Instructor of Speech Communication at the University of Mississippi. She was an early adopter of generative artificial intelligence in the classroom context. Amy is an enthusiastic, dynamic speaker focused on engaging, pragmatic presentations: over the past couple of years, she has delivered conference talks, hosted workshops, and been an invited speaker for educators, administrators, and students in six states. She also delivered a TEDxUniversityofMississippi talk encouraging educators to guide students’ effective AI usage. She believes that AI is unavoidable, and both educators and students should become literate and fluent in it within bounds that protect academic integrity and learning.
Amy holds a B.A. in Strategic Communication from Miami University, an M.A. in Communication Studies, and is finishing her Ph.D. in Communication Studies at the University of Kansas. She has coached speech and debate, and taught courses in public speaking; group communication; communication on the internet; rhetoric, politics, and mass media; business communication; and the rhetoric of Taylor Swift. Her research interests include political communication, pop culture, and artificial intelligence in education.
“Amy’s presentation was very engaging from start to finish. She found ways to encourage the faculty at our university to think about their own use of AI and provided meaningful solutions for how to improve that practice.”
